Yoga has been life changing for me! Although I have always been interested in various exercise modalities and their effects on the body, I never really considered Yoga as one with such a vast utility in health until I gave it a try for myself a few years ago. Within weeks, I began seeing my own health improve. Once I noticed my own changes I hit the books to dig deeper into the research. The benefits I had been seeing were validated and I began recommending yoga to my patients, family and friends!
The mechanism for many of these health benefits are through the poses which promote strength, flexibility, balance and mobility as well as decrease in cortisol levels which plays a role in inflammation, chronic disease such as heart disease and diabetes, depression, anxiety, pain, insomnia, stress, digestion and cognition.
I have included here a list of studied benefits of Yoga:
- Improved strength
- Improved flexibility
- Improved Balance
- Improved mobility
- Improved sleep
- Decrease in overall stress
- Decrease in anxiety
- Improves depression
- Improved overall quality of life
- Decrease inflammatory markers
- Improved immune function
- Improved cognitive function
- Improvements in chronic pain such as low back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, labor, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome and migraines
- Improved blood pressure
- Improved cholesterol
- Delay in progression of heart disease
- Improved digestion and gut health
- Improved breathing and lung function through breathing exercises
It is hard to know where to start.
For me, it was YouTube Channel -Yoga with Tim (no affiliation) by Tim Senesi
YouTube is a great resource during COVID19 times! There are many channels out there you can try out for yourself! I encourage you to first check with your physician to ensure that you do not have any contraindications to yoga and once that is done, START SLOW! Learn the basics first and continue to build on that.
There are a few poses that I love for beginners. You will find these in many of the yoga flows and learning how to do them right is important! I have included a link to a website I love (no affiliation) Yogajournal.com for a visual guide.
